UK regulator investigates Air Peace for suspected safety breaches

UK regulator investigates Air Peace for suspected safety breaches.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority has informed Nigeria’s Civil Aviation Authority of reported safety regulation breaches by Air Peace. This development occurred shortly after the Nigerian carrier launched its Lagos-London route just three months prior. Allegedly, two mandatory occurrence reports regarding Air Peace were sent to the UK Civil Aviation Authority, which subsequently relayed the complaints to the NCAA.

The complaint letter from the CAA forwarded to the NCAA bore the titles “United Kingdom SAFA Ramp Inspection Report” with reference number CAA-UK-2024-0217 and “NATS Management System Safety Report.” Additionally, the NCAA has contacted Air Peace requesting clarification on the matters raised. The letter from the NCAA, with reference number NCAA/DOLTS/APL/Vol.11/03624, was titled “United Kingdom SAFA Ramp Inspection Report.”

Dated May 14, 2024, and signed by Capt. O.O. Lawani, General Manager of Operations at the NCAA, the letter highlighted concerns raised by the UK CAA regarding Air Peace’s operational approval of Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) functions. It noted that the captain of the flight had acknowledged the use of an EFB for navigational purposes. The NCAA further cited the UK CAA’s observation of the absence of a mounting device, charging points, or backup battery for the EFB.

Air Peace recently initiated flights to London Gatwick from Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos under the Bilateral Air Services Agreement between Nigeria and the UK. Attempts to reach Air Peace’s spokesperson, Stanley Olisa, were unsuccessful at the time of reporting. Upon contacting the airline’s spokesperson, the conversation abruptly ended when the reporter inquired about the matter. Additionally, a text message seeking clarification was sent to the spokesperson, but no response was received by the time of filing the report.
