Turkish Airlines denies allegations of discriminating against members of the aviation union

Turkish Airlines has denied allegations made by the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) in Lagos, claiming that its members are being victimized by the airline. The airline responded to these claims in a statement, stating that seven members of NUATE were implicated in a ticket racketeering case. According to Turkish Airlines, the employees were found to be involved in ticketing reservation violations, resulting in significant economic loss to the airline. Despite engaging in discussions with the union and providing evidence of the employees’ wrongdoing, Turkish Airlines asserts that the union has threatened industrial action if the employees are not reinstated. Turkish Airlines has taken legal action to address the situation and ensure the legality of the union’s actions. Despite this, NUATE proceeded to picket the airline’s check-in stations at Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos, disrupting operations until airport authorities intervened.

Based on the events of March 26, 2024, the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) issued formal injunction notices on April 30, 2024, restraining NUATE and its affiliated unions from engaging in any industrial action that disrupts the airline’s operations. Despite being associated with the Nigeria Labour Congress picketing, NUATE’s actions led to the disruption of the airline’s business and forced flight cancellations on May 21, 2024.

Turkish Airlines emphasizes its commitment to prioritizing the interests of its passengers and employees since its establishment in Lagos, Nigeria, in 2006. The airline has consistently supported its employees’ participation in unions of their choice and aimed to collaborate harmoniously with governmental and non-governmental entities in Nigeria.

However, the airline condemns these unlawful behaviors and actions, which contradict its principles of transparency and management and result in significant financial losses. Turkish Airlines asserts its intolerance for such illegal actions and vows to take appropriate measures and exercise its legal rights in response to these incidents.
